How PRP and Stem Cell Therapy Are Expanding Clinical Options and Diversifying the Veterinary Practice
Veterinarians often manage cases where inflammation, degeneration, or slow healing limit what standard care can achieve. PRP and stem cell therapy give clinicians options when all other treatments have been exhausted, by supporting natural processes already present in the body.
Understanding what these options do and when to consider them helps veterinarians use them confidently and responsibly.
PRP: what it does and where it fits
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is made from a patient’s own blood and concentrates platelets that contain growth factors involved in healing and inflammation control. Once activated through Ardent's process, platelets release these growth factors to support tissue repair, support an anti-inflammatory environment, and participate in cell signaling.
In practice, PRP is commonly used to support:
Joint and soft tissue health in mobility and osteoarthritis cases
Wound healing and post-operative recovery
Ocular and oral conditions where tissue repair is needed
Because PRP uses autologous blood and follows a simple technician-led protocol, many practices find it approachable and easy to integrate in their practice.
Stem cell therapy: supporting regulation and repair
In veterinary medicine, stem cell therapy most often involves mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) or adipose-derived cell populations, like the stromal vascular fraction (SVF). These cells are primarily used for the signals they release, which can help regulate inflammation, support immune balance, and promote tissue repair.
Stem cell therapy has been used in cases involving:
Degenerative joint disease and long-term mobility decline
Chronic skin and immune-related conditions
Gastrointestinal disease and select neurologic cases
Rather than replacing damaged tissue, these cells help influence the environment around injury or disease.
Why this matters in everyday practice
PRP and stem cell therapy give veterinarians more options when standard approaches are no longer enough. They are not replacements for established care, but tools that can be used alongside it to better support individual patients.
These concepts are explored further in the RACE-approved CE webinar Regenerative Medicine in Veterinary Health: PRP & Stem Cell Therapy, presented by Dr. Adrienne Wright of Ardent Animal Health, which focuses on clear science, real use cases, and practical guidance.
