Nutrition is one of the key elements in the management of diabetes. Not just the calorific intake but the nutrient composition of the diet impacts on the body’s response and potentially medication requirements. New pharmaceuticals for the management of diabetes do still require that attention is paid to the nutritional composition of the diet and understanding of how these nutrients effect response is vital.

  • Be able to assess the diet of the diabetic to see if it suitable for the patient
  • Be able to recommend the most suitable diet for the patient
  • Understand the role that specific nutrients (within the diet) have on the effect of medications used for the management of diabetes
  • Be able to discuss with the owner, reasons behind nutritional recommendations
  • Justify reasonings and recommendations for timings of feeding, feeding behaviours and exercise regimes
