Veterinary nurses (RVNs) are essential members of the surgical team in any veterinary practice. However, it is often noted that surgical nurses are not used to their full capabilities due to role misunderstanding and underutilisation.
Surgical nurses significantly enhance the efficiency of the vet practice's surgery list, positively impacting both surgical patient and client care. Working alongside the Veterinary Surgeon, active delegation of minor surgical procedures can improve surgical outcomes, patient care, and team dynamics. This lecture aims to identify effective strategies and frameworks for expanding surgical nursing responsibilities, providing practical, actionable advice for nurses working in surgical settings.
In addition to their key role in patient care from admission to discharge, RVNs provide an array of technical and professional skills that are vital during the perioperative period. While some practices actively encourage the utilisation and development of veterinary nurses' surgical skills by performing minor surgery (under Schedule 3 guidance), many RVNs still feel unsupported and unable to thrive. Underutilisation often leads to decreased job satisfaction and limits opportunities for career progression.
Student veterinary nurses undergo training to develop competencies in minor surgical procedures, such as wound closure and suturing. Without consistent use post-qualification, confidence in performing surgical skills may quickly deteriorate due to limited practice or support.
