Caregiver burden as a concept has been around in human healthcare for a long time, but recently work has demonstrated it also impacts pet owners. Caregiver burden has been defined as the multifaceted physical, emotional, and financial strain experienced by pet owners caring for a companion animal with a chronic, terminal, or high-need medical condition. This talk will cover recent research on which conditions might trigger caregiver burden, how it impacts owners, and what as veterinary professionals we can do to help.
