Dr. Jimena Laporta is an associate professor of lactation physiology at the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She earned her B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Animal Sciences from Uruguay before moving to the United States to pursue her Ph.D. in Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which she earned in 2014. After a 5-year faculty appointment at the University of Florida Department of Animal Sciences, Dr. Laporta returned to the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences at UW-Madison in 2020. She has made significant contributions to the fields of lactation biology, environmental physiology, and fetal programming of dairy cattle. Her research focuses on understanding the intricate interactions between nutritional and environmental factors affecting mammary gland development and function and calf perinatal development. She has developed an integrated approach to investigate how prenatal (in utero) and early postnatal life experiences can program calf physiology and future production potential across multiple generations and lactations. A primary focus of her lab is investigating the influence of heat stress on the epigenome of offspring to better understand the long-term implications for the health and productivity of dairy cows.
