Hans Spoodler

Bio

Hans is a senior scientist and EU account manager at Wageningen Livestock Research in Wageningen, The Netherlands. As an applied ethologist, he specialises in animal behaviour and welfare on farm, during transport and at the abattoir. In 1998 he obtained a PhD on social and stereotypic behaviour of sows, and has worked on issues related to space allowance of pigs, tail biting, aggression during mixing and pig handling. He wrote or co-authored 40+ peer-reviewed papers and 80+ presentations at scientific conferences. He is active as EU account manager for the Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen UR, supporting WUR colleagues who develop international research projects. His experience in managing European R&D activities started in 2004, and since then he has been involved as coordinator, deputy-coordinator or project office manager of several EU funded projects in recent years. He currently leads two Horizon2020 projects: a Chinese-European Horizon2020 project called 'HealthyLivestock' (which aims to reduce the need to use antimicrobials by improving animal health and welfare), and 'mEATquality' (on the relationship between animal welfare and the quality of meat).
