Andrew Gardiner spent 16 years in general practice, working for animal welfare charities, emergency clinics and in private practice, during which time he obtained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Certificate in Small Animal Surgery. After taking ‘a year out’ to do a Master’s degree in the history of science, technology and medicine, he was awarded a doctoral scholarship in medical humanities to research 20th British veterinary education and practice at the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, University of Manchester. After the PhD, he joined the staff of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (R(D)SVS) in a role design to promote the teaching of general practice across the undergraduate curriculum. Since 2009, working with students and volunteer veterinarians, he has run All4Paws, an accessible veterinary care practice for homeless and vulnerably-housed animal owners in Edinburgh. In 2024 he was awarded a Personal Chair in Veterinary Medical Humanities at the R(D)SVS, thought to be the first such chair in the world.
