Why does gundog training have such a bad image? Why is the term “Traditional Gundog Trainer” often used as an insult?
Hopefully looking back at the development of our working dogs may give an insight into modern training preferences. Training is all about developing the innate qualities contained within our working companions. It is about letting our dogs be as natural as possible in the working field. This can only be achieved by an understanding of the dogs emotions, moods and cognitive abilities.
This talk should shed some light on the “old” traditional methods of training that are only now being reflected in cognitive learning and affective neurological research.
Hopefully, you will discover that for field work, Skinnerian modes of training aren’t as important as the emotional, thinking dog that’s working in front of you.
