Treating The Pet Chicken – Part 2
Victoria Roberts
The recent upsurge in pet chicken keeping has, in part, been fuelled by the organised rescuing of ex-battery hens with around a quarter of a million of these having been placed, estimated total backyard hens is now 3 million. The metabolism of birds is significantly higher than mammals, so illness (and recovery) can both happen quickly. New chicken keepers are likely to want the best veterinary treatment for their hens, just as they would for their cat or dog.
Victoria has had over 40 years of breeding and judging exhibition poultry and waterfowl. She is honorary avian lecturer at Liverpool Vet School, edits the British Poultry Standards, has had a veterinary poultry column in Country Smallholding for 12 years, has several books on poultry published and is a past President of the British Veterinary Zoological Society.
